National Campaign

As a result of the tragedy of September 11, 2001, the Office of Homeland Security (OHS) was created to coordinate "homeland security" efforts.  The mission of the Office was to develop and coordinate the implementation of a comprehensive national strategy to secure the U.S. from terrorist threats or attacks. In 2002, OHS became a stand-alone agency known as the Department of Homeland Security.

In the wake of September 11th, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority enlisted the eyes and ears of New York citizens as part of its local anti-terrorism strategy and developed the campaign, "If You See Something, Say Something™." 

In 2010, DHS licensed the slogan for national anti-terrorism and crime related efforts. It has promoted the campaign via partnerships with states, sports leagues, universities, property groups, and malls throughout the country. Since then, the campaign has evolved to include the Nationwide Suspicious Activity Reporting Initiative. This effort provides law enforcement with another tool to help prevent terrorism and other terrorism-related crime by establishing a national capacity for gathering, documenting, processing, analyzing, and sharing suspicious activity information.

The campaign came to the national forefront again in 2013 due to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings and the Boston Marathon bombing, to name a few recent tragedies. These occurrences can serve as reminders about the importance of the If You See Something, Say Something message.
